Title: AI-Driven Solutions for Sustainable Underground CO₂ Injection and Environmental Monitoring
Overview:
In the face of escalating climate change concerns, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) through underground CO₂ injection has emerged as a critical strategy in global mitigation efforts. The infusion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques into this domain offers transformative potential, from optimizing injection processes to enhancing site selection, real-time monitoring, and ensuring regulatory compliance. This special issue aims to gather pioneering research and applied studies at the confluence of AI, geosciences, environmental engineering, and data analytics, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.
Scope and Objectives:
This special issue seeks to delve into cutting-edge AI methodologies and data-driven approaches that promote sustainable underground CO₂ sequestration. Contributions are invited on, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Geospatial Analysis & Site Characterization:
- AI-enhanced geological and geophysical data processing for optimal site identification.
- Integration of EPA datasets (e.g., UIC well data, environmental monitoring records) with geospatial analytics.
- Advanced predictive modeling of CO₂ behavior in geological formations.
- Real-Time Monitoring and Sensor Data Fusion:
- Machine learning algorithms for anomaly detection and sensor data analysis.
- Development of early-warning systems for potential leakage or environmental hazards.
- Techniques for integrating real-time sensor data with historical datasets to enhance monitoring precision.
- Process Optimization and Digital Twins:
- AI-driven optimization of injection parameters (flow rates, pressures, strategies).
- Creation of digital twin models for simulating CO₂ injection and reservoir dynamics.
- Decision support systems powered by AI for operational efficiency and safety management.
- Risk Assessment and Environmental Impact:
- Machine learning approaches to assess leakage risks, caprock integrity, and induced seismicity.

Submission Guidelines:
We welcome original, unpublished work that is not under consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts should strictly adhere to the submission guidelines outlined on the [Journal/Conference Website]. We encourage theoretical, methodological, experimental studies, and case studies with a clear focus on AI applications in underground CO₂ injection and environmental monitoring.
Manuscript Requirements:
- Length: 6,000–8,000 words for full papers.
- Format: Follow the journal’s standard formatting guidelines.
- Abstract: A concise abstract (150–250 words) summarizing key contributions and findings.
- Keywords: 4–6 relevant keywords.
- Supplementary Material: Authors are encouraged to include datasets, code, and multimedia as supplementary material, if applicable.
